BP Oil Spill Live Feed Update: BP Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Solution Update – It’s already been two months since the explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oilrig started spilling oil into the Gulf of Mexico. British Petroleum has already tried several solutions to cap the plumes of oil spilling into the blue waters of the gulf, none of which has been successful in containing the spill.
As of June 19, BP has reported that a total of 11,050 barrels of oil was already collected and 25.6 million cubic feet of natural gas was transported using the LMRP oil spill solution involving the Discoverer Enterprise vessel. Their estimate of 5,000 barrels a day as the rate of the spill however is being contested by several branches of the US government seeking a much more accurate count.
The latest update from BP is that two systems are now continuing to collect the oil and gas flowing from the broken oil pipe. The first is the Lower Marine Riser Package containment cap located on top of the Deepwater Horizon’s failed blow-out preventer (BPO) while the second system, which started on June 16, is connected directly to the BOP and carries oil and gas through a manifold of hoses to the Q4000 vessel on the surface.
A third collection system is expected to begin operations around the end of June or early July.
The current estimate for the cost of oil swirling in the gulf is approximately $2 billion. This amount includes the amount of oil in the gulf, oil spill claims, relief well drilling, federal costs, and the various oil spill solutions implemented in the past.
