Dell’s Web marketing director Barton George proudly announced that the company aiming to release Ubuntu-based laptops targeted at web developers.

Dubbed project Sputnik, this 6-month old effort is set to bring out XPS13-based laptops pre-loaded with Ubuntu 12.04.

After we build the management tool and some basic profiles to get the effort started, we are hoping that the community will take over and began creating profiles of their own

George says that the company is already planning a management tool to pull down developer configurations for Android, Ruby and JavaScript from a github repository, basically allowing you to configure your machine using various developer profiles instead of cramming every possible tool into the hard drive.

If successful and priced accordingly, it might just give web developers a cheaper, linux-based alternative to getting macbook pros.
