After multiple tests from tech blogs, experts and common folk alike, one thing is clear, just holding the iPhone 4 makes it lose reception. At a loss on how to resolve this problem on their shiny new iPhone, most prudent folks sent an email to Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs. As it happens, one of them recieved a reply, and it was not what he was expecting.
Steve Jobs replied saying to stop holding the phone that way. Screenshot included below:
In addition, Apple has formally sent Engadget the following statement:
“Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.”
The official statement basically means that the problem is how we hold our phone. Issue solved? Well not really. Apple implicitly saying that those bumpers that they’ve touted during the iPhone 4 announcement is the solution to the loss of reception. Macintouch reader Saam G said that Apple Support confirmed the issue, blaming “a missing protective coating on some of the parts.”
On the other hand, Steve Jobs himself was holding his phone that way during his keynote during his announcement of the iPhone 4.
